How lithium batteries are transforming airports towards a sustainable future

13 June 2025

In the midst of the race to meet the objectives of the European Green Pact, the airport sector is positioning itself as one of the major drivers of technological transition. Boosting energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions at airports is no longer an option, but a strategic step towards a more competitive, modern and sustainable model.

After years of pandemic-induced slowdowns, European airports have restarted their green conversion plans with a vengeance. The focus is now on electrifying more and more ground support equipment (GSE), from tow tractors and boarding ladders to PRM platforms, belt loaders and GPU units. This transformation will not only drastically reduce emissions by 2030, but also improve operational efficiency and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

In this context, smart lithium batteries emerge as a key solution to accompany this paradigm shift. Their ability to offer autonomy, reliability and fast rechargeability makes them the energy heart of a new generation of cleaner, quieter and connected airport machinery.

1. Lithium electrification: the tipping point for more efficient aviation

The future of airports is electric. However, this is not an instant revolution, but a gradual evolution, in which different rates of technological adoption coexist. On the one hand, there are original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that have been committed to electrified systems for years, first with lead-acid batteries and, more recently, with lithium-based solutions.

On the other hand, many companies that once considered the initial investment to be unaffordable have now begun to appreciate the real impact of the change, recognising the strategic role of electrification in the long term.

This dual scenario - the production of new electric 100% equipment and the replacement of lead-acid batteries with lithium in existing fleets - is now on the agenda of airports and ground handlers. An increasing number of companies that manage ramp services, from passenger transport to baggage logistics, are now looking to see lithium as the key to moving towards a more agile, sustainable and cost-effective energy model.

TCO: the real decision criterion

In this transition, the concept of total cost of ownership (TCO) has become the decisive factor. While lithium batteries may have a higher initial price tag, TCO analyses show that this technology significantly reduces operational costs over time. Less maintenance, superior energy efficiency and longer service life are just some of the benefits that tip the balance.

In fact, compared to an average energy efficiency of 75% in lead-acid batteries, the latest generation of lithium batteries, such as those developed by NCPower,  outperform the 96% in efficiencywith much reduced loading times (up to 75% faster) and more than 4,000 life cycles. In addition, they allow partial or opportunity charges without degrading the system, resulting in greater autonomy and operational availability.

This translates into a return on investment (ROI) much more attractive for logistics operators, airports or fleet-intensive companies.

Beyond lead: a strategic decision

The limitations of lead are obvious: long recharge times, the need for constant maintenance, the risk of toxic gases during charging, low efficiency and hidden infrastructure costs. Electrification with lithium, on the other hand, represents a quantum leap towards ground support aviation that is more modern, cleaner and ready for the challenges of a changing industry.

"Today, it's no longer just about meeting regulations or reducing emissions: it is about become more competitive, efficient and sustainable. And lithium, when accompanied by a smart, safe and customised solution, is the way to go," Carlos Calatayud, NCPower's quality and support engineer.

2. Security and sustainability

The transition to all-electric ground support equipment is not only driven by economic or energy efficiency criteria. Increasingly, airports and operators are prioritising a broader objective: reducing environmental impact of its operations and ensure a safer environment for workers and users.

The replacement of thermal machinery by electrical equipment with lithium batteries enables completely eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissionscontributing to a substantial improvement of the air quality in airport areasThe road network in the city has traditionally been characterised by high levels of activity and vehicle concentration.

In addition to this environmental benefit, the drastic noise reductionElectric equipment is much quieter than its diesel or petrol counterparts, which translates into healthier and more comfortable working conditions for ground staff. A quieter environment not only improves communication on the runway, but also reduces acoustic stress and operator fatigue.

Operational safety: from fuel to lithium

In addition to eliminating the risks associated with the handling and storage of fossil fuels, electrified equipment significantly reduce fire and leakage risks. There are no emissions, no vapours and no need to handle flammable liquids. But safety goes even further when batteries are used with lithium-ferrophosphate chemistry (LFP)such as those used by NCPower.

LifePo4 chemistry is today considered the most stable and safest chemistry for industrial machinery and electric vehicles requiring intensive use. Its technical properties, such as high thermal resistance, low reactivity and controlled heat releaseThe new technology is a guarantee against one of the greatest fears in energy environments: thermal runaway.

When this technology is combined with a intelligent battery management system (BMS)capable of constantly monitoring temperature, voltage, current, and charge cycles, the result is a solution that highly reliable and safeeven under demanding operating conditions such as those found on airport aprons.

3. Supporting OEMs and ground handlers

An airport is much more than a transport infrastructure. It is a highly coordinated ecosystem, where every second counts and every machine plays a key role in the operational chain.

In this context, it is essential to have the GSEs on board:

  • Tow tractors
  • Boarding stairs
  • PRM platforms
  • Shuttle buses
  • GPU or tape loaders

These ground support equipment They make up a veritable fleet on the move that needs energy solutions to match the airport's pace.

From 2012in NCPOWER we have worked hand in hand with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) y ground operators to electrify all types of airport machinery, by developing customised lithium batteries that respond precisely to the technical, logistical and environmental requirements of each project. This experience has made us not only a battery supplier, but also an important supplier of batteries. strategic technology partner that accompanies the customer from the initial analysis to maintenance in real use.

Customisation: beyond capacity and voltage

There are no standard solutions in the GSE sector. Each application has its own consumption profile, operating conditions and logistical requirements. That is why NCPower we analyse in depth the energy needs of each machineas well as the environmental conditions where it will operate (from extreme climates to coastal environments) and the cargo infrastructure available at the airport.

Our lithium battery packs can integrate key features such as:

  • IP54 / IP65 sealingideal for outdoor conditions and exposure to dust or water
  • Active thermal managementwhich maintains optimum performance in very cold or very hot climates.
  • Remote diagnostics and predictive maintenancewith 4G connectivity option for remote control
  • On-board and off-machine loadingfacilitating operational flexibility in any environment.

Predictive maintenance: machines that don't stand still

At airports, disruptions are not an option. Runway vehicles must always be ready, operational and safe. The smart lithium batteriesintegrated with advanced management and monitoring systems, allow to implement predictive maintenance that prevents failures before they occur.

Thanks to our connectivity solutions and continuous analysis of critical parameters, we offer OEMs and operators real-time access to the status of each battery. This allows us to:

  • Visualising the performance and consumption of the entire fleet
  • Detecting anomalies or deviations before they become problems
  • Plan maintenance in advance and reduce downtime
  • Optimising future investments based on actual usage data

With this vision of energy consultingNCPower not only electrifies machines, but also helps its partners to make better strategic decisions in your electrification projects, optimising performance, safety and profitability.

4. Towards the airport as an integrated smart factory

The challenge now is not just to electrify more machines, but to do so. in an intelligent, coordinated way and in synergy with other systems, consolidating the Industry 4.0 concept.

The goal is clear: to turn the airport into an agile, automated, zero-emission ecosystem, where all elements (vehicles, infrastructure, data and energy) work together to achieve greater operational flexibility, increased safety and maximum energy efficiency.

Autonomous tow tractors are already being developed, and more and more manufacturers are making progress in the design of autonomous tractors. automated GSE equipment able to operate without direct intervention, as is the case with a smart factory.

The combination of autonomous technologies and clean energy redefines the way airports manage their ground operations. Equipment that loads automatically, reports its status in real time and adapts dynamically to traffic flows and weather conditions: this is the horizon that is already beginning to take shape.

But for this vision to be realised, it is imperative to smart energy infrastructures capable of accompanying this new paradigm. Infrastructures that:

  • Facilitate the automated and scheduled loading of the fleets
  • Integrate with logistics management and data analytics platforms
  • Ensure an efficient, scalable and adaptable energy supply
  • Contribute to an airport environment integrated, connected and sustainable
