Safety Strategies for NCPOWER Batteries

30 April 2024

The safety of lithium-ion batteries is a top priority at NCPOWER. While lithium-ion batteries are safe as a whole, with billions of cells produced each year, it is inevitable that failures will occur in some cases. It is therefore crucial to implement effective strategies to address these issues and ensure the long-term safety of batteries. We have a multi-layered safety system that is key to achieving this.

1. Working with the leading and safest lithium battery manufacturers. Choosing the best components for the manufacturing process.

NCPOWER carefully selects its battery cells from the world's leading manufacturers such as EVE y CATL. These manufacturers have a long history of producing high quality and safe batteries. In addition, NCPOWER uses only high quality components in its batteries, such as chargers and its unique and patented BMS (battery management systems) with the best technical features and finishes.

2. Production Quality Control and Ageing Tests

The production quality of batteries is critical to their long-term safety and performance. At NCPOWER, we ensure rigorous quality controls are carried out throughout the manufacturing process.

This includes:

  • Quality tests at the end of the production line
  • Initial capacity testing
  • Impedance tests to identify possible faulty cells
  • Certification testing to ensure compliance with safety standards
  • Long-term ageing tests to evaluate the performance of batteries under real-use conditions

While these tests are essential, they have the limitation of only assessing a point in time and do not reflect the actual conditions of use.

3. Battery Management System (BMS)

The Battery Management System (BMS) plays a crucial role in the short-term safety of batteries.

In NCPOWER, our patented BMS performs several simultaneous functions:

  • Constantly monitors battery voltage, current and temperature
  • calculates and monitors the state of charge (SOC)
  • Balances cells for safe operation

If values outside the set limits are detected, the BMS takes action to bring the system to a safe state. However, we recognise the limitations of the BMS in detecting anomalies and are constantly looking for ways to improve its performance and accuracy. In parallel, this is why we work at five layers, in order to ensure the maximum safety of our lithium-ion batteries.

4. Data Analytics in the Cloud

Adopting advanced technologies helps us ensure the long-term safety of our batteries. That's why we've implemented cloud analytics to complement the capabilities of the BMS. Our cloud analytics collect data from the BMS and use physical battery models and machine learning to predict ageing and detect long-term anomalies.

This additional layer of security offers several advantages:

  • It allows us to analyse ageing trends on a daily basis
  • We can identify potential problems before they occur
  • We have the option of defining different analysis indicators
  • We compare systems and can detect anomalies
  • It allows us to take preventive measures

By anticipating the potential risk of any battery, we can ensure the continued safety of each battery.

Cloud-based analytics complement the BMS and quality testing, providing business intelligence to mitigate risks throughout the life of the battery.

5. NCPOWER System

NCPOWER has developed a proprietary technology, the NCPOWER System. It is a battery management system that offers competitive advantages in several respects.

It stands out for its numerous functions:

  • OPTIMISES BATTERY PERFORMANCE
  • PROLONGS BATTERY LIFE
  • IMPROVES SAFETY AND PREVENTS FAILURES
  • CONTROLS AND MANAGES LOADING AND UNLOADING
  • PROVIDES ACCURATE BATTERY DATA
  • ALLOWS REMOTE MONITORING
  • BALANCES THE LOAD BETWEEN CELLS
  • PROTECTS AGAINST EXTREME TEMPERATURES
  • AVOID OVERLOADING AND DEEP DISCHARGE
  • PROVIDES ALERTS AND NOTIFICATIONS

In short, the NCPOWER System offers a comprehensive solution to optimise batteries for increased performance, productivity, energy savings and service life.

It is a system that is configured according to the application and characteristics of the device. It can be configured according to the needs of each customer, which increases performance and extends the life of the battery with more recharge cycles.

Our system allows remote monitoring of all the parameters of each battery, provides a system of alerts and collects all the data relating to its actual operation.

The NCPower System converts standard batteries into customised, intelligent packages, capable of delivering the safety, comfort and versatility our Partners need.

Conclusion

At NCPOWER, we are committed to the safety and reliability of our batteries. Our comprehensive safety strategies include production quality controls, a robust BMS and advanced cloud-based analytics. Thanks to these layers, we can ensure that our batteries meet the highest safety standards.

Ultimately, our priority is to give our customers peace of mind that they are using safe and reliable batteries in all their applications.
